Literacy Week Term 2: Healthy Smile Meet Our Community Dentist

Literacy Week is one of Jean Mayer Preschool’s termly programs that encourages students to develop a love for reading while exploring topics connected to their everyday lives. For Term 2, our activities focused on community helpers, introducing students to one of the familiar professionals in their community: the dentist!

Our Literacy Week activities began on Tuesday, when students brought their favorite storybooks from home to share with their friends. Throughout the week, they had dedicated time to explore and read the books they brought. On Thursday, students enjoyed reading together and returned the books they had borrowed, making reading a fun experience to share with others.

The highlight of the week took place on Friday, when we welcomed a dentist from Papua Orthodontic Clinic to Jean Mayer Preschool. During this special visit, students learned about the importance of keeping their teeth clean and healthy. The dentist introduced them to proper dental care and explained how dentists help people take care of their teeth.

The excitement continued with fun activities prepared for the students, giving them opportunities to learn through hands-on experiences. They also had the chance to meet the dentist in person and receive free dental check-ups. It was a wonderful way for students to become more familiar with dental visits and understand that taking care of their teeth is an important part of staying healthy.

To make the day even more exciting, our students came dressed as different professionals in their community. From pilots and police officers to doctors, their costumes brought lots of color and excitement to the celebration. The students were enthusiastic about showing their outfits while learning more about the different roles people play in helping our community.

Through Literacy Week Term 2, we hope our students will continue to develop their interest in reading while gaining a better understanding of community helpers, especially dentists. By combining books with real-life experiences, learning becomes more meaningful, enjoyable, and memorable.
